The Birdman was seen as the representative on earth of the creator god Make Make  

One of the most famous motifs on Easter Island is that of birdman - a half-man, half bird image that was connected to cult events at the sacred site of 'Orongo.where priests chanted. The paramount chief - 'ariki mau' - held the original power in the society as was typical throughout Polynesia.
There arose a un usual cult of the Birdman (Tangata Manu). The Birdman was seen as the representative on Earth of the creator god Make, Make.The power on the island was seized by this warrior class called 'matatoa' whose emblem was the Birdman. The result was a decline in the old religion of ancestor worship and monolith building and an increase in acts of warfare.
